Where is the Sense of Urgency on Ukraine?

By Lieutenant General Frank Helmick, U.S. Army, Retired

Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick, U.S. Army, Retired, joined SOSi in 2012, after a distinguished 36-year military career. While in the military, he was the Commanding General of America’s only Airborne Corps and the nation’s largest military installation, Fort Bragg. He served as the Deputy Commanding General for Operations with United States Forces–Iraq and commanded the Multi-National Security Transition Command–Iraq and the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO) Training Mission–Iraq.

OPINION — As the war intensifies on the ground, on the sea, and in the air between Ukraine and Russia, the conditions for Ukraine are growing increasingly dire by the hour. While U.S. lawmakers debated before finally approving an aid package, Putin’s forces mobilized, adapted, and gained momentum, with battalions massing at the border, potentially signaling an imminent offensive. Now, there is a mad dash to get the desperately needed ammunition, equipment, defense systems, and funding to where it is needed most.

The road to aid is long and arduous, which leaves Ukrainian forces clinging to their positions and waiting for reinforcements as their resources dwindle and as their critical infrastructure is under constant attack.

The fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance and the fate of global stability, with it.

A Ukrainian defeat could embolden Putin and jeopardize NATO’s resolve, setting a dangerous precedent for other nations around the globe.

My recent visit to Ukraine with The Cipher Brief revealed a palpable sense of unease and waning hope, as the toll of the conflict weighs heavily on its people. Despite facing overwhelming odds, the Ukrainian military valiantly repelled Russian advances, leveraging innovative tactics and external support to defy expectations. This incredible bravery, intense desire to succeed, and ability to mobilize, train, equip, and deploy forces to the front cannot be sustained without consistent and reliable support from the U.S. and all of its NATO allies.

Sustained financial support is crucial for Ukraine’s survival. Without it, the country races against time to rebuild its military capacity and morale, as fatigue and disillusionment threaten to undermine its defenses. The impending arrival of F-16 aircraft presents both opportunity and challenge, requiring strategic guidance and a sound fielding, maintenance, and security plan to ensure effectiveness on the battlefield.

The future remains uncertain, with internal restructuring in Kyiv and the upcoming U.S. presidential elections adding complexity to the situation. Any negotiations for a demilitarized zone would offer a glimmer of hope, but Ukraine faces tough decisions regarding its territorial integrity.

International solidarity is paramount in this global conflict. NATO’s acknowledgment of its shortcomings underscores the need for unwavering support. It is time for U.S. leaders to make a resounding commitment to Ukraine, backed by the same sense of urgency that Ukraine is facing to safeguard its sovereignty and uphold international principles. Deeds, not words!

Even though you might have seen the still horrific images of destruction on the news, we cannot grow numb and indifferent to Ukraine’s fight.
