UN to Vote Wednesday on New North Korea Sanctions

The U.N. will vote today on new sanctions against North Korea. The New York Times reports that the sanctions will be especially strong, and will attempt to hit elites while limiting hardship caused to regular North Korean citizens. The sanctions were negotiated by the U.S. and China, and include mandatory inspection of all cargo going to or from North Korea; the banning of exports of coal, iron, and various other metals from North Korea; and measures to prevent countries from opening new branches of North Korean banks or creating new joint ventures with those banks. While the sanctions are very strong, it is expected that they will pass since both the U.S. and China support them.
