The Islamic State carried out two bombing attacks in Damascus and Homs, which resulted in at least 140 deaths. The BBC reports that the attacks occurred in areas populated primarily by religious minorities, with the Damascus attack occurring in a Shia suburb and the Homs attack striking an Alawite neighborhood. These attacks also occurred shortly after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told the media that Syrians can start to return to Syria without fearing for their safety.
