Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal signed in Auckland

The twelve member nations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have formally signed the controversial trade deal. According to the BBC, the signatory nations now have two years to ratify the agreement before it goes into effect. The TTP members include the U.S., Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Peru, which collectively account for 40% of the world’s economy. The U.S. government is hoping it will help to prevent China from growing too powerful in the Asia-Pacific region. However, the TTP has drawn significant criticism and protest over concerns about losing jobs and weakening the sovereignty of member states.
