The Department of Defense is due to release its plan for shutting down the Guantanamo Bay detention center today. The Washington Post reports that, while the President wants the detention center closed, Congress has set very rigid guidelines for what it will and will not accept. Several members of Congress are avidly against the idea entirely, as it would involve relocating the detainees to facilities in the United States. There are 91 detainees in Guantanamo Bay, 56 of which would still be present in the event that the facility was closed, and current law prevents them from being held in the U.S. However, moving the detainees to a U.S.-based facility is projected to be several million dollars cheaper per year than the current arrangement, and it has been a goal of the Obama administration since he took office.
