Myanmar opens new parliament session after military rule

Myanmar’s first democratically elected government in 50 years has sworn in hundred of members of parliament. According to the BBC, the National League for Democracy – led by Aung San Suu Kyi – won 80% of the available seats during the parliamentary elections in November.  Despite the move towards greater democracy, the military still controls 25% of the total parliamentary seats. The parliament will now need to choose a president. However, this is a topic of some contention, as Ms. Suu Kyi is not lawfully able to hold the office, although she still plans to maintain significant control over the government.
