Myanmar’s first democratically elected government in 50 years has sworn in hundred of members of parliament. According to the BBC, the National League for Democracy – led by Aung San Suu Kyi - won 80% of the available seats during the parliamentary elections in November. Despite the move towards greater democracy, the military still controls 25% of the total parliamentary seats. The parliament will now need to choose a president. However, this is a topic of some contention, as Ms. Suu Kyi is not lawfully able to hold the office, although she still plans to maintain significant control over the government.
