Japan signs pact to supply defense equipment to Philippines

Japan has reached an agreement with the Philippines wherein it will provide defense equipment and technology to the other country. The Washington Post reports that the details of the deal are still unclear, but so far Japan has offered to send surveillance aircraft. This deal comes at a time when China is being more assertive in the South China Sea – much to the alarm of Japan and the Philippines. The deal itself is likely one aspect of an attempt by nations with an interest in the South China Sea to counter-balance China’s rising strength in the region.
