Research done by IHS has revealed that the Islamic State may have lost up to 22% of its territory over the last 14 months. The BBC reports that the research also stated that ISIS’ revenue is down 40% and that the number of foreign fighters traveling to ISIS-controlled areas is decreasing. Losing control of the Syrian-Turkish border appears to be a big factor in the latter two conclusions, as it is now more difficult for the extremist group to engage in smuggling activities. Additionally, the deaths of several high-level ISIS leaders may be decreasing the effectiveness of the Islamic State’s propaganda efforts.
