China military spending growth slows in line with economy, army downsizing

China has announced that its military spending will increase by 7-8% in 2016, which is the first time in six years that the country has experienced single-digit growth in that area. The Washington Post reports that the decreased spending is due in part to China’s slowing economy, but is also meant as a sign that China wants to resolve the tensions in the South China Sea politically, rather than militarily. Experts have said that the actual defense spending will likely exceed the official, reported numbers as well. In addition to lower growth spending rates, the Chinese military is decreasing its overall number of troops.
