Sources within the Taiwanese and U.S. governments have announced that China has placed surface to air missiles on one of the disputed islands in the Paracel chain in the South China Sea. CNN reports satellite imagery showed that the missiles were placed on Woody Island, although the Chinese government has not yet confirmed or denied their presence. China moved the missiles to the island while a summit for Southeast Asia countries was occurring the California – a summit that included a call from President Obama to stop the militarization of the South China Sea. While many see this move as an open provocation, the government of Taiwan is calling for all parties involved to cooperate and work together towards a peaceful solution.
