The Malaysian government announced that it stopped a plan by Islamic State militants to kidnap its prime minister, home minister, and defense minister. CNN reports that in January 2015, 13 people with ties to the Islamic State were planning to conduct the kidnappings and hold the officials for ransom. However, the Malaysian government also asserted that there is not an Islamic State network in Malaysia, and that the Islamic State’s leadership in Syria was directing this cell remotely.
