OPINION –The Defense Department’s unclassified investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has grown from $600 million five years ago, to a proposed $2.5 billion for fiscal 2021, with some 600 AI projects already underway, according to an updated Congressional Research Service (CRS) report titled, Artificial Intelligence and National Security, released last Wednesday.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field of technology with potentially significant implications for national security,” the CRS report says, adding, “As such, the Department of Defense (DOD) and other nations are developing AI applications for a range of military functions.”
