Syrian Kurds Hope to Establish a Federal Region in Country’s North

Kurdish groups in Syria are developing a plan to create a federal region that encompasses the territory they currently hold in the country. The New York Times reports that the plan is still being refined, but that both the U.S. and Russia tentatively support a federal system in Syria. Turkey does not support a federal system, and it is directly opposed to greater Kurdish autonomy in the region. At present, it is unclear to what extent this plan will affect the current round of peace talks.
