The World Health Organization has established an emergency team to coordinate responses to the spread of the Zika virus in South America, the BBC reports. The last time the WHO created a such a team, it was to manage the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. There are concerns that Zika could spread even faster, as it is transmitted by mosquitos, and weather conditions caused by ongoing El Nino weather patterns are creating ideal conditions for a surge in the mosquito population. The primary danger of Zika is that it appears to correlate strongly with infants being born with microcephaly and certain, otherwise rare, nervous system disorders.
