Apple Goes to Court, and F.B.I. Presses Congress to Settle iPhone Privacy Fight

Apple has filed a formal response to the federal court that ruled it must comply with FBI requests to help break into an iPhone. The New York Times reports that Apple asked that the demand be rescinded, and several other major firms – including Microsoft, Google, Twitter, and Facebook – are expected to file briefs in support of Apple next week. The FBI has asked Congress to settle the issue, although Apple has also made that request. The current issue is the latest iteration of an ongoing conflict between the tech industry and law enforcement about encryption and the trade-offs between privacy and security. Apple’s CEO has said that they will take this issue to the Supreme Court, if necessary.
