MEXICAN SPACE MUMMY MESS: Members of Mexico’s Congress heard from some interesting “experts” recently who claimed to have “evidence” of mummified “non-human” life forms found in Peru. Mexican journalist José Jaime Maussan presented the “evidence,” but it turns out it had previously been shown in Peru in 2017 and was determined to be “recently manufactured dolls, which had been covered with a mixture of paper and synthetic glue to simulate the presence of skin.” AP quoted Julieta Fierro, a researcher at the Institute of Astronomy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, expressing skepticism, saying that many details about the figures “made no sense.” She added “Maussan has done many things. He says he has talked to the Virgin of Guadalupe,” she said. “He told me extraterrestrials do not talk to me like they talk to him, because I don’t believe in them.”
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE – BUT MAYBE NOT IN HERE: We must admit, it never occurred to us to ask the question – do other countries treat UFO sightings as big secrets – the way the U.S. has long done? The question did occur to Terrence McCoy though, who, writing in The Washington Post, says: no, not so much. Apparently, there are lots of UFO sightings in places like Brazil, but that country makes reports of odd airborne phenomena a matter of public record. We have found no record of South American countries insisting on calling UFOs UAPs…but perhaps they do.
WATCH THIS SPACE: The CIA’s gift to students doing homework and writing essays: “The World Facebook” has recently added a new section that provides an overview of foreign nation’s space programs noting the nation’s “areas of expertise and focus, national goals, international cooperation, and commercial space sector activities if applicable.” From what we can tell – the Agency’s gaze into space does not list the foreign nation’s views on UFOs.
MUCH NICER SPACE DEPENDING ON YOUR SITUATION: Officials recently allowed a glimpse of the White House Situation Room after a $50 million refurb. As readers of The Dead Drop know, the Sit Room is a complex of rooms on the ground floor of the White House where a lot of serious stuff happens and gets monitored. The most famous monitored moment perhaps was when President Obama and team watched Osama bin Laden meet his maker back in 2011. But the facility has endured a lot of wear and tear over the decades and now it has gotten a major upgrade. Officials say the new, improved Sit Room now “looks like the movies” (Hollywood always imagined a niftier command center than reality provided.) The pictures released show a complex almost so nice – it would be a shame to mess it up during future crises. Associated Press said that the place features “cutting-edge tech, mahogany and that new car smell.”
RUSSIAN “RARE BUT REGULAR” REPRESENTION: Sergei Naryshkin, the top guy in Russia’s foreign intelligence service the SVR, reportedly told the Russian state news agency RIA that his outfit has contacts with the CIA “regularly” but at long intervals – which would sort of imply to us that it is really not that regular if it is rare – but maybe the point was lost in the translation from Russian, right? One of those contacts, according to The Guardian newspaper, came after the Wagner Group’s aborted coup in June. Apparently, the CIA is interested in having more contact with certain Russian officials as indicated by a new video the Agency has released. The one minute and 36 second video titled, “Why I made contact with the CIA – for myself” was posted on social media and shows an actor playing a Russian official trudging through the snow and the voiceover suggests that while some Russian government officials may not want to hear the truth “we do” and the video provides several ways for Russians to contact the CIA. We’re guessing this is not the kind of contact Naryshkin had in mind.
HUGE PROPS: Go out to Private First Class Nathaniel Paprade, who just completed Marine Corps boot camp. Doing so is a major achievement for any young man or woman – but in the case of Laprade it is especially noteworthy because at 4 feet 7 inches tall, he is believed to be the shortest Marine in USMC’s long history. Private Laprade seems to be fully onboard with joking around about his height, telling a reporter that his fellow recruits “…kind of looked up to me in a way.” Apparently, there are no clear records of the shortest person to enter the other services (seems rather short–sighted, no?) although Richard James Flaherty, at 4 feet 9, served as a Green Beret in Vietnam and apparently, made a huge impression. Having proven he can overcome the obstacles of Parris Island, we expect big things in PFC Paprade’s future.
SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION: News from Behind-the-Scenes at The Cipher Brief:
BEHIND-THE-SCENES PHOTOS: Cipher Brief CEO & Publisher Suzanne Kelly is sharing behind-the-scenes images from The Cipher Brief's third trip to Kyiv this year, on LinkedIn. One of our favorites is a snapshot taken at a dinner in Kyiv with some really interesting guests. The group includes General David Petraeus (Ret.), Ukraine's Minister for Strategic Industries Alexander Kamyshin, World Central Kitchen Chef Jose Andres and documentary filmmaker and actor Sean Penn. Spies tell us the table was packed with other Ukrainian guests who are leading innovative investment projects in Ukraine. We're hungry for more.
BEHIND-THE-CAMERAS INSIGHTS: Cover Stories Podcast host Bill Harlow sat down with two of the great minds behind the new Netflix series 'Spy Ops' to talk about how the documentary series about real-life spy operations came together. We won't tell you if Executive Producer John Loew and Consulting Producer (and former CIA Chief of Counterintelligence) Mark Kelton spilled any secrets. You'll have to listen to find out.
POCKET LITTER: Dead Droplets and bits and pieces of interesting /weird stuff we discovered:
RUSSIA’S CAT-A-STROPHIC INVASION OF UKRAINE: Intelligence officials in Kyiv are no doubt mining all kinds of useful information from Maxim Kuzminov, a 28-year-old Russian pilot who recently defected to Ukraine. And so they should – since press accounts say Kuzminov received a reward equivalent to about $500,000 when he defected, bringing with him his Mi-8 helicopter and some really interesting stories. One that caught our eye was an assertion that one of Putin’s commanders used two military helicopters to airlift the commander’s pet cat. Well, it was a small cat, so he only needed one helicopter to carry it – the second one was allegedly just flying cover. We imagine the fur will fly if this news gets back to Putin.
