Britain’s Top Security Threats in 2019

By Nick Fishwick

Nick Fishwick CMG retired after nearly thirty years in the British Foreign Service. His postings included Lagos, Istanbul and Kabul. His responsibilities in London included director of security and, after returning from Afghanistan in 2007, he served as director for counter-terrorism. His final role was as director general for international operations.

2018 was a year dominated by a new range of worries for national security experts in Britain.  Brexit and a series of untraditional statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, kept things interesting, to say the least.  This, in addition to the traditional security issues that keep the British up at night, like terrorism, cyber attacks against government and the private sector, espionage and nationalist violence.

The British Security Service MI5, keeps an ongoing list of threat levels that it shares with the public to track the likelihood of threats, particularly from terrorists.
