Dr. Robert Griffin is the Deputy Under Secretary for Science & Technology at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Prior to this appointment, Dr. Griffin served as the Director of the Science and Technology Directorate's First Responders Group, where he led efforts to strengthen the first response community's ability to protect the homeland and respond to disasters. Dr. Griffin came to DHS after a twenty-year career in local government as a senior leader and first responder. He served as the Director of Environmental Services for Arlington County, Virginia, and was appointed the first Director of the Arlington County Office of Emergency Management, in Arlington, Virginia.

Technologies meant to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more numerous as people become more concerned about bad actors using UAVs for illicit purposes. The Cipher Brief asked Dr. Robert Griffin, Deputy Undersecretary for Science and Technology at the Department of Homeland Security, about the risks and benefits of these emerging technologies.
