FBI, U.S. Police Scramble After London Terror Attacks

John Perren served as the Assistant Director for the FBI's Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, where he led the USG law enforcement and domestic intelligence efforts to prevent and neutralize WMD threats against the US Homeland and interests abroad. Prior to this, Mr. Perren held the position of Deputy Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation Division. He was responsible for leading the violent crime, criminal enterprise, special operations, and crimes against children programs. Mr Perren also led the Southwest Border Initiative for the FBI and participated with SOUTHCOM on the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force, and was the FBI's Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Counterterrorism Program with the responsibility to prevent and respond to all terrorism and weapon of mass destruction incidents in the National Capitol Region. Prior to his appointment to the FBI, Mr. Perren was 14 year member of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., working as a patrol officer, plain clothes officer, undercover officer and detective. Mr. Perren is an Adjunct Professor with George Washington University, College of Professional Studies Master's Program in Homeland Security where he teaches intelligence/ strategic analysis and emergency management/crisis communication. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology at American University and a Master's Degree in Criminology with a leadership emphasis in WMD at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

As two of the suspects in London’s Saturday attacks are identified, U.S. law enforcers are working to assess any potential threat here. That includes an assessment of the UK attackers, and examining what’s needed to secure the United States. To explain the procedures in more detail, The Cipher Brief’s Elaine Shannon spoke to John Perren, the FBI’s Former Assistant Director, Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate.
