Increased Instability

Ashebir Wondimu is a senior forestry expert working in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He has held a number of other positions in government working with natural resources, restoration, and forest management. He has also worked with the World Resources Institute, Farm Africa, ZOA Refugee Care, SOS Sahel Ethiopia, and many other programs. He is currently pursuing a M.Sc. in climate change and sustainable development from Hawassa University, and received a B.Sc. in forestry from the same university.

Ethiopia faced one of the worst droughts in decades this year due to unusually strong El Niño effects, linked to climate change. The Cipher Brief’s Kaitlin Lavinder spoke with Ashebir Wondimu, a senior forest expert working in Ethiopia’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, about the national security implications of climate change and what the Ethiopian government is doing to respond.
