A Revolution in Artificial Intelligence

Paul Scharre is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Technology and National Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. He is author of Army of None: Autonomous Weapons and the Future of WarFrom 2008-2013, Mr. Scharre worked in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) where he played a leading role in establishing policies on unmanned and autonomous systems and emerging weapons technologies. He served as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.

New technologies are changing the face of future warfare and few will be as impactful as the fusion of artificial intelligence into weapons systems. The Cipher Brief spoke with Paul Scharre, Senior Fellow and Director of the Future of Warfare Initiative at the Center for a New American Security, about the rationale for, and complications presented by, the development of autonomous weapons systems that could eventually choose and engage targets without human involvement.
